SALARY: $19.70 Hourly $40,990.35 Annually

DESCRIPTION: Under supervision, receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service, determine urgency and priority, obtain the information and details regarding these requests, input data into a computer system and dispatch police, fire, EMS and/or other services as appropriate. Process and monitor prisoners in municipal jail who have been arrested and awaiting trial or transferal. After appropriate training, provide medical instruction to the caller until the first responder arrives.

Roane  County Emergency Communication Center accepts applications for 911 Public Safety Telecommunicators and Call-takers. Candidates must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License, be able to type 40 words per minute (net) and possess either a GED or a high school diploma. Candidates may be subject to an oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological and job-related physical examinations, and drug testing.

 

Brief Job Description: Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for information and assistance via telephone, radio, and written teletype. Direct calls to a source of assistance. Maintain constant status information on all police, fire, and EMS units via computer terminal. Operate complex computers, telephones, radios, audio recorders, 9-1-1 PSAP equipment, and other technical equipment. Have access to highly sensitive, confidential information. Work according to 24-hour scheduling with work hours subject to change according to demand. Must be willing to work any shift, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary. Job duties include multiple simultaneous tasks that must be performed on demand. High liability and high-stress factors are common. Excellent benefits package provided.

As the first line of response for citizens in distress, Public Safety Dispatchers serve as the critical lifeline between the public and law enforcement, fire and medical responders.  An applicant must have a high school diploma (or GED) and be able to complete a prescribed course of instruction by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, which requires passing of a stringent background investigation.  Applicants must also be 18 years of age before the hire date and must be a citizen of the United States.

 

The current starting salary for a Public Safety Dispatcher is $36,233.60 per year with an additional 5% increase after a six-month probationary period.  Those candidates with public safety dispatcher experience may also be eligible for additional starting pay rate based on their qualifications

Salary for entry level Call-takers beginning at $14.38 per hour and increasing to Telecommunicator pay $16.08, upon successfully completion of training and promotion to Telecommunicator.
