Dispatch Commander - Fire Department

Job Summary

Works under general directions of the Emergency Medical Services Division Chief, in a complex and highly sensitive emergency (fire and 9-1-1) communications center.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Directs, manage and supervise 15 or more dispatchers of the Dispatch Center.

2. Monitors and reviews all functions of the Dispatch Center as to correctness or completeness in the dispatching of fire equipment, appropriate personnel, ambulances, or other appropriate equipment/personnel within Fire Department established protocols, under emergency situations.

3. Develops protocols for emergency computer aided dispatching.

4. Develops and implement 3-shift, 24-hour operational monthly work schedules for a staff of 15 dispatchers.

5. Develops and maintain up–to-date computer hardware and software needs; write necessary specifications for those CAD (computer aided dispatching) software and hardware needs.

6. Reviews and monitor daily incoming emergency calls, logs and records to ensure established Fire Department procedures and protocols are followed by the dispatching staff.

7. Develops functional job descriptions for emergency dispatchers within the Fire Department.

8. Establishes guidelines for the hiring of new dispatchers & supervisors; conduct applicant interviews & make recommendations for hiring; prepare employee disciplinary action forms and make recommendations up to and including terminations.

9. Abilities to order vital communications equipment through Shelby County 911 Board.

10. Performs related responsibilities or duties as required or directed.

Rhea County 911 is accepting applications from qualified individuals interested in a career as a 911 Telecommunicator.


Preliminary testing will be conducted to judge skills in typing, data entry, reading and listening comprehension, situational judgment, critical thinking, and map reading. Applicants must pass all preliminary testing in order to proceed to the next phase of the hiring process.

After basic training, Telecommunicators will earn a salary of $16.27 per hour. The position does include health insurance, benefits package, and retirement.

911 Public Safety Telecommunicator & Calltakers

Sumner County Emergency Communication Center is currently accepting applications for 911 Public Safety Telecommunicators and Call-takers. Candidates must possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License, be able to type 3000 keystroke per hour (net) and possess either a GED or a high school diploma. The process consists of an oral interview, extensive background investigation, psychological and job-related physical examinations and drug testing.

Salary for entry level Call-takers beginning at $16.50 per hour and increasing to Telecommunicator pay in steps, upon successful completion of training and promotion to Telecommunicator 4 with pay up to $18.00 per hour. There are opportunities for periodic pay increases, as well as great benefits (medical, vision, and dental). Our standard shifts are 12-hour shifts, 2 days on and 2 days off, 3 days on 3 days off.
